Decluttering

I look around me and see piles of things everywhere. Piles of my sons books and toys, piles of paper work and piles of goodness knows what else!

I KNOW that we have too many things, I know that we don’t need all that we have, I know that I would be better off without a lot of them (both financially and mentally) … so why haven’t I done anything.

It’s that age old problem… STARTING and FINISHING!!

At the beginning of the year I made a real effort to tidy my son’s bedroom… putting the books on the bookshelf, tidying the toys into the boxes under his bed, laying his rug neatly, ensuring all the clothes were in the drawers - and that they were all clothes that are still appropriate in size for him now (or in the very near future). I am proud of what I achieved in his room. I felt a sense of “I have finished this room to the best of my ability” … and, I have maintained it!

In doing his room, I had to sort out some old clothes of his - giving some to charity, some to a friend and lending some to my sister-in-law for her new son and also selling some on Ebay.

I have tried over the last couple of weeks to do similarly throughout the house, but have never reached that satisfaction of “I have finished this room to the best of my ability” - and therefore I haven’t maintained it - mainly due to not having enough decent storage for many things.

I think that the reason I managed to complete my son’s room was that it is a manageable space with good storage options - under bed baskets, 3 bookshelves, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers. I also purchased a ‘pop-up basket’ to store all the cuddly toys which had previously been occupying the bookshelves.

In order to make more progress I need to focus on SMALLER areas at a time. I plan to work on the drawers in the house - one each day - to try to free up some actual storage room - as some of these are just storing/hiding unnecessary clutter.

I’m hoping that in doing so, I will not only be getting rid of things, but also making some money on Ebay from the unwanted (by me) things in the house.
